Meet Sally
Weaving Heritage into Every Stitch
My name is Saliwe Daniella Gumbo - though most know me as Sally. My story is a journey across borders, woven together by a pair of knitting needles and a promise made decades ago.
Roots and Heritage
Born in Toyando, Shayandima (Limpopo), I carry the vibrant spirit of South Africa in my daily life and the rich blood of Zimbabwe in my soul. Every year, I return to Zimbabwe to reconnect with my roots, keeping the traditions of my ancestors alive in everything I do.
A Gift from my Grandmother
I first picked up knitting needles at the age of ten. I grew up in a humble home where resources were few, but my grandmother was a woman of great vision. She sat me down and taught me the craft with a piece of wisdom I will never forget:
"You must learn to knit, because one day, it will bring bread into your home."
She wasn't just teaching me a hobby; she was giving me a lifeline. She wanted me to have a skill that ensured I could always provide, no matter what the future held. Today, while I work as an office assistant in Johannesburg, knitting remains the heartbeat of my home.
A Mother's Mission
Beyond the wool and the patterns, my greatest pride is being a mother to my two daughters, Pamela (21) and Isabella (19).
Every piece I create carries a specific purpose. I am currently knitting to build a bright future for my youngest, Isabella. She is an aspiring legal mind, and every cent earned from my craft goes directly into a fund for her law school education.
When you support my work, you aren't just buying a handmade garment - you are helping a grandmother's legacy put a young woman through law school.
